* <big>Squidge</big> does know a lot about hardware and software - and therefore he helped us testing various devboards and SoCs from the very beginning.

* <big>Scott Smith (known as Pickle)</big> joined the community after discovering the GP2X. Soon after he began to support a number of application ports for the GP2X.

* Shortly before the GPH Wiz released to the public development versions of the Wiz were sent out to help generate porting of existing software to the Wiz.

* Scott was given one of these units and helped bring many of the existing GP2X software titles to the Wiz. One highlight of the Wiz development work was the first person shooter Quake 1 and 2. This was significant since it was using the opengl-es 1.1 hardware on the Wiz.

* This brought the attention of some on the Pandora team, since at the time the only running opengl-es software on the Pandora were demos. As a result a development board was sent and shortly after Quake 1/2/3 were running on the Pandora using the SGX hardware. Other software was also ported to the Pandora as well, which most can be seen on Scott’s youtube page. He also helped test out the analog nub’s, which resulted in the first demo of them being used in Quake engines. Scott is currently working on helping to bring more software to the Pandora.

* In real life Scott is a software engineer in the automotive field in Detroit, Michigan.

* <big>vimacs</big> doesn't have a devboard yet, but also did help a lot with the .PND fileformat.

* <big>Scott Smith (known as Pickle)</big> joined the community after discovering the GP2X. Soon after he began to support a number of application ports for the GP2X.

* Shortly before the GPH Wiz released to the public development versions of the Wiz were sent out to help generate porting of existing software to the Wiz.

* Scott was given one of these units and helped bring many of the existing GP2X software titles to the Wiz. One highlight of the Wiz development work was the first person shooter Quake 1 and 2. This was significant since it was using the opengl-es 1.1 hardware on the Wiz.

* This brought the attention of some on the Pandora team, since at the time the only running opengl-es software on the Pandora were demos. As a result a development board was sent and shortly after Quake 1/2/3 were running on the Pandora using the SGX hardware. He also helped test out the analog nub’s, which resulted in the first demo of them being used in Quake engines. Scott is currently working on helping to bring more software to the Pandora.

= Kernel status =
The first [[firmware]] release was based on a heavily patched linux-2.6.27-omap1 kernel. linux-omap used to be OMAP community kernel fork, nowadays its code was either merged to mainline or dropped. Further OMAP development continues on mainline kernels, linux-omap tree is mainly used to queue developed code to mainline.

Current firmware releases are based on 3.x kernel series.

Driver support in 3.x series is more or less complete, however not all parts are merged to mainline kernel due to various reasons.

Support for various kernels is available in pandora-XX branches or tags, XX corresponds to last part of kernel version number. 2.6.27 is an exception, it's in pandora-27-omap1 branch.

Branches based on pre-release -rc kernels will be often rebased. This means you can't do 'git pull' on them, use 'git fetch; git reset --hard origin/pandora-XX' instead. '''Warning''': this will destroy all your changes (even if they are commited), backup them first!

The firmware is all of the software that is supplied with a device, so does include the applications which are provided as standard. It is all open source (meaning that OpenPandora provides the source code, often as a requirement of the [http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html GNU GPL]). A small quantity of the firmware is provided as binary files, which OpenPandora may not be at liberty to disclose the full details of. An example of closed source firmware is for the analogue nubs, which are shipped with small micro-controllers pre-programmed by the nub manufacturer. Only some of the hardware designs and occasional binary blobs like the [[WiFi]] driver are currently not open source; the rest of the firmware stack is open source (predominantly GPL with some LGPL).

== Replacing the Firmware (Un-bricking) ==

Rather than patch the firmware, the firmware may be replaced wholesale with a freshly downloaded firmware. This ought to be regarded as a last resort in the case of problems, there is almost certainly a simpler way to fix most problems.

then holding down the right shoulder button on boot and booting from the SD card. (It doesn't require an operating system on the SD card, but it will use the boot configuration specified there). This is a text mode boot to the shell, using the [[kernel]] from the [[NAND]].
This should provide a way of bypassing any broken startup scripts, adding in logging for a normal boot, etc. It does not start the full OS, just a basic shell.

== Reporting bugs ==

Please do make sure that you are using the latest official firmware and hotfix. Installation of non-free codecs is highly discouraged. Consider instead free counterparts like opus, ogg vorbis and Flac for audio. webM, ogg theora for video or equivalent.

Due to licensing issues, licensed codecs like MP3 or MPEG-Video can not be distributed freely. They are optionally available in the Codec Package.
The package will install Gnome-MPlayer as well as a lot of audio / video-plugins and enables NTFS-support.
To install it, simply download the .PND-Package and place it into either the /pandora/menu or /pandora/desktop - Folder on your SD-Card.

This should provide a way of bypassing any broken startup scripts, adding in logging for a normal boot, etc. It does not start the full OS, just a basic shell.

The OpenPandora is a pocket sized computer which is a combination of a PC and a Gaming Console. == First Time Use ==

Place the battery inside the battery compartment underneath the OpenPandora taking care to ensure the battery contacts and battery touch. Please the battery cover on and your OpenPandora will power up.

As this is your first time using the Battery it is recommended you fully charge your OpenPandora to 100% using the AC Adapter as this will calibrate and improve the lifetime of your battery. This process may take up to 4 hours. If you're not planning on using the OpenPandora whilst it is charging you should flip the power switch to the left (Low Power Mode) as it should decrease the charging time dramatically.

Once the OpenPandora has completed charging it will stop charging and begin discharging to protect the battery from damage.

While you are charging your OpenPandora completing the first boot wizard is essential.

*Calibrate Touchscreen - This will ensure that the TouchScreen works perfectly.
*Enter Full Name - This personalises your OpenPandora
*Enter Short name - can be a fancy nickname or just your fullname in all lowercase
*Enter Password - anything you like and you'll need to verify it
*Choose a name for your OpenPandora - Give it a fancy name as this will be the network visible name.
*Automatic Login - Entirely up to you. Preferably off if you don't want others to use your OpenPandora without your permission
*GUI choice - Slimmed down basic GUI - Minimenu or full Linux OS - Xfce
*TimeZone / Date and Time - Recommended you do set this correctly as it may cause problems down the track with certain applications.
*CPU Clock Speed - Recommended that you set to Default unless a game / application is running slowly.
*Advanced settings - Do not change until you are comfortable with the device.

The OpenPandora nubs are designed to automatically calibrate when you turn your Pandora & Calibration is lost once the OpenPandora is switched off.

When you copy a PND to SDCARDNAME/pandora/apps it will appear in its preset category.

Controls for Mini Menu:

* Launch a PND by pressing 'Start', 'B' or touching the icon with the stylus or finger.

The task bar by default contains settings for Brightness and Sound, various enablers such as Wifi, Bluetooth and USB host, Network Connectivity, Battery life, Date / Time and various workspaces you can select.

*If a window for an application is too big for the screen you can drag the window around by holding the left trigger and dragging with the stylus.
*Changing your workspace is as easy as holding 'Start' & "Select' then using the D-Pad to switch
*Killing an application is as simple as holding the Pandora button down for 5 seconds, selecting the application and clicking okay

===Power modes===

Pushing the power button to the left will turn the OpenPandora to low power mode for conserving battery which is similar to sleep mode on a computer but the Pandora can still run.

Connecting USB2 High Speed devices is possible using the standard USB connector or USB On The Go adapter. USB 1.1 devices will only work through a USB hub.

Occasionally something will happen causing your Pandora to become unresponsive (to the point that even killing a program isn't possible). *Angstrom Repository - Contains several applications for your Pandora. It is not really recommended that you use this unless you are an advanced user.

Installing applications is as simple as dragging them to the appropriate folders on your SD Card.
These folders are:
* <SD>/pandora/apps - Will appear both on Xfce Desktop & Pandora Menu (this is the 'both' option in PNDManager)
*<SD>/pandora/desktop/ - If you want it to appear on Xfce Desktop
*<SD>/pandora/menu/ - If you want it to appear in Pandora Menu
